From La Puente (where she was born) to the Rio Hondo Community College Board of Trustees in 1985, the California Assembly in 1992, and the California State Senate in 1994 (where she was the first Hispanic woman to serve in that body). Re-elected there in 1998. After which she was elected to Congress for four consecutive terms. Then becoming US Labor Secretary under President Obama (as the first Latina to lead one of the Federal Government’s Executive Departments). And her own “wins” at storytelling competitions held by NPR’s famed show THE MOTH. The Moth is a non-profit group based in New York dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling. Founded in 1997, the group presents storytelling events across the United States and abroad, often featuring prominent literary and ccultural personalities. The Moth offers a weekly podcast and in 2009 launched a National Public Radio Show THE MOTH RADIO HOUR, which won a Peabody Award in 2010.
